Due to the recent legislative changes and the new implementation of the Species Conservation Act the FGCA will not be hosting a Butternut Health Expert Workshop this year.
We are working hard to gather all the information about the new Species Conservation Act as it pertains to butternut and black ash and to understanding all that is required in the legislation and regulations. We will endeavor to have comprehensive Butternut and Ash Workshops in 2027 to provide you with the most accurate and up to date information.
Those who have signed up, will remain on the waitlist for the 2027 workshop and have first access to registration when it becomes available.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
BHE workshops are designed to offer a training replacement for BHA accreditation previously required to assess butternut trees in Ontario for conservation and recovery.
This workshop is geared for those who have participated in previous training as a BHA and would like a refresher and for qualified professionals who have not yet participated in butternut training. This training will increase comfort level in assessing the health of butternut trees using the Butternut Assessment Guidelines.
This course will cover:
- Method for assessing butternut health
- Legislation and regulations under the ESA with respect to butternut
- Recovery efforts for the species
- Identification of pure butternut vs hybrids
- Using Ministry of Environment Conservation and Parks (MECP) forms for reporting butternut assessments
- Lunch provided
The field portion of the course will allow attendees to practice butternut identification, assessment and reporting skills in a forest setting.
If you have not already, we strongly encourage you to become a member of the FGCA, as we are keeping members apprised as information becomes available about butternut, black ash and the SCA.
